I just finished books one and two of Lucky Harbor by Jill Shalvis. They were both wonderful! Filled with just enough romance and sexy scenes to call it a great romance read, it was also filled with fun, witty humor and the look inside another family's emotional baggage.

I laughed out loud more times than I can remember in a book. The sisters we meet in this series, Tara, Maddie and Chloe are a fun bunch who all have the same mother but different fathers. Although they know one another, they've never dealt with each other for extended periods of time - until their mother dies and leaves them an Inn in Lucky Harbor.

If you are looking for an easy, funny and romantic series, look no further than the Lucky Harbor books. I'm definitely putting book #3 on my "to read" list on GoodReads.

It makes one expect a very thrilling series! I am glad that I was given the chance to read it - and now know that I am hooked! I need to know "what comes next" for everyone involved.

The Team Hope series was first published in 2005, with Flee the Night first, Escape to Morning second, and Expect the Sunrise third. I am a Kindle girl. This Novella is available on Kindle for only $1.99. The first and third books of the series are also currently available on Kindle. I cannot locate Escape to Morning as being available for Kindle but I did "click the button" to send the Publisher a note that I'd love to read it on my Kindle.

The first and third books of Team Hope are also currently available for Amazon Prime members to "borrow" for one month for free.

I was excited to learn that I was chosen as a stop on the blog tour for Suzanne Woods Fisher's newest book, The Keeper. Just goes to show that God has a funny way of showing us things - even if we're not listening.

Julia wasn't listening to God. Julia was listening to what she had built in her head over the years. Roman was running away, again, not listening to God but although no one was listening God still showed them His way. Don't think that this is just a love story either; many other story lines of those who aren't listening are out there.

The underlying message that I got out of it? God works in mysterious ways. Whether you're listening or not, His will be done.

The Keeper is full of laughs and surprises. It also pulls at heartstrings, as so many of the other books of Suzanne W. Fisher have done for me.

Walgreens Prescription Savings Club (due to loss of Express Scripts)

On December 31, 2011, after a year of negotiations, Walgreens and Express Scripts have parted ways. Walgreens is no longer a part of the Express Scripts pharmacy provider network. This includes all Walgreens pharmacy locations nationwide as well as Duane Reade pharmacies in the NYC area. See this press release: Walgreens and Express Script

I can’t imagine the havoc this has created for people who are used to just going into their “regular” pharmacy with their “regular” pharmacist! Now they will have to go elsewhere, to a stranger, perhaps go farther away than their local Walgreens. It doesn’t seem like these customers will see their costs go down while moving to their new pharmacy.

From what I understand, Walgreens offered to keep their rates constant for the new contract with Express Scripts- they did not seek an increase in their rates. The sticking point seems to be that Express Scripts wanted to be able to say what does and does not constitute a brand name vs. a generic drug. They also proposed to cut the reimbursement rates Walgreens received to rates below the industry average cost to provide each prescription to their customers.

Seems that Walgreens can provide a 90 day supply of a drug to a customer which conflicts with Express Scripts own mail order drug program which provides 90 day supplies to its customers. A little conflicting considering Express Scripts stands to make more money from dispensing medications from their own , in-house, mail distribution program.

Now Express Scripts has also chosen to give America’s military a hard time as well as all of the “other” customers they’ve put out by not resigning Walgreens as a preferred pharmacy. Tricare is one of Express Scripts clients. Tricare is the health and prescription program for our service men and women. In order to not put them out, Walgreens offered to contract Tricare separately from the other Express Scripts clients. The answer was no.

This is an issue because no one really sees what Walgreens gets paid by Express Scripts. No one knows what the impact of this change will be but it could stretch far and wide. In order to eliminate some of the burden on its clients, Walgreens has introduced a special discount on annual membership for its Prescription Savings Club. During this special January promotion, an individual can join for $5. A family can join for $10. This Prescription Savings Club allows participants to receive savings on more than 8,000 brand name and generic medications. More than 400 generics are available with a three month supply for less than $1 per week. Also included are: discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and more. There is even a discount for buying Walgreens brand products in their stores. If you join after the January promotion, the regular annual membership cost is $20 per individual and $35 per family. Even though employers want to keep Walgreens in their pharmacy network, Express Scripts doesn’t see it that way. To stay up to date on all of the happenings between Walgreens and Express Scripts, be sure to follow Walgreens on Twitter and “like” Walgreens on Facebook. Maybe some type of compromise might be had between the two companies in the future.

Almost Two Weeks into 2012

We're over a week into 2012 and I have yet to post a single blog entry. Sad? Kind of. All types of things are in the works. For instance, we're knee deep into Twink's gymnastics competition season which will run through the end of February and began in December.

Here are a few photos of her from her last competition. In the first, she gets AIR on the balance beam. She landed that jump but unfortunately fell off the beam twice during her scored competition. In the second, she is proudly presenting in third place for her vault performance. She did so well!!

Although there were no State qualifying scores this weekend or in any of her previous meets, she still has two left in which to score in order to qualify for the State competition at the end of February. Last week she was short by .9 and the week before by .6. So close! If she doesn't get the scores, no worries; there is always next year!

I am thankful for her learning the sport of gymnastics - safely and becoming more and more confident in her skills with each practice and competition. I am thankful for her coaches who take the time to teach the girls proper techniques so they learn at their own pace and progress well without pushing them past the breaking point. They teach so the girls love it, not so they'll be burnt out in 3 years of competition. Although, she could use a little push on her bars skills!

Last week, I took some time to myself and read Stephanie Haefner's Karma Kameleon. Kara Kameleon is the sequel to her 2010 release, A Bitch Named Karma.

Meeting the main character, Lexi, again was fun! Since it had been a bit since I read the first book, it took me a while to reacquaint myself with all of the lead characters. Once I did, though, I was hooked. I needed to keep reading to find out where our heroine would wind up in the end: with her Prince Charming and her baby boy or all alone because of Karma? Get your copy today to find out!!

This was an enjoyable page turner for me! I hope you enjoy it too!

Guest Post: First Disney Trip (Final Post)

Time to go. Mixed feelings-- we were excited to actually get home bc we were exhausted and had to work on Monday. But of course Disney magic is great!

Of course it was not without stress that we went home. Got back to the hotel checked out bags in but due to a snafu on the part of my DH's names we had to check our bags ourselves in the airport. AGAIN not really getting the full effect of the Magical Express. They ALMOST loaded our bags onto the wrong magical express bus, too. FAIL on magical express. I am the crazy lady who ran out of the hotel screaming "that is our bags dont' load them up"...We were apologized to like a million times, but it woudl have been ugly if I didn't have super detective skills.

Airport good. But at the last minute they changed our gate so we had to move. THEN the US AIR debacale.

FLIGHT HOME--

We are ready to go (again our faults for booking a later flight since boys were cranky and had a stinky diaper right at take off). We are moving to our seat and realize that ALL of my family's seat were double booked. So I have my 4YO, 2 YO and DH and I without seat. My parents were willing to give up their seat for us and stay the at Orlando Airport knowing that we had to get home. But the stewardess (well one) decided to "remedy" the situation about 20 minutes into the boarding (my son is hysterical because he needs a diaper change right now and my other son is sitting alone next to some stranger. So the stewardess says ok 2YO boy sits here, 4 YO sits here, You sit here and DH sits here. ALL SINGLE SEATS. So in essence, this lady's remedy is to have my 2YO sit next to a random person. ARE YOU NUTS??? My DH lost it--the other passengers--thank goodness for the kindness of strangers. They moved themselves around so at least me and my 2YO were together and my DH and 4YO were together.

So again MORE WAITING and finally we were able to take off 30 minutes into boarding. I had to diaper change my son while we were "supposed" to be buckled in bc he was hysterical. But he survived too--thanks to lots of gummi bears and my Iphone for his videos. WE MADE IT HOME. With a story to tell.

In SUMMARY---I am sure you are NOT still reading this though. :)

We were slightly disappointed in our trip. I guess when you put your trust in something like Magical Express, travel agent, there thing you can't anticipate to happen....we also didn't expect the magnitude of the people there. I know it was supposed to be crowded but with youngin' like mine I just was stressed the entire time about losing them. BUT, we LOVED it at the same time. My son's expressions, the memories the pictures, the videos. Its worth another trip. But we'll do it OUR way next time.

My DH has sworn off planes and we basically "decided" that next time we go we will drive ourselves, stay in the resort for the bussing (which we liked), and drive back.

Grading scale-

Dining Plan- B EH- again, we waiting just SOOO long at Rose and Crown it was just not worth it. To do it again, we may just do counter service and book our own character thing one time.
Disney Photo Pass A+++ -- I am an avid scrapbooker. It was worth it all. For that great family shots. And great memories to boot.
US AIR F F F never again.
Flame Tree BBQ A+
Rose and Crown C -- see above.
Caribbean Beach B- -- too many bus stops and waiting. GORGEOUS though. Perfect for couples and adults. Kids, not so much. I would have preferred to stay at at the value resort or some kind of theme.
Magic express- C -- they almost lost of our luggage and due to a typo on my travel agents' part (and us showing tons of id's to prove the mistake) they would not take our bags and again LOTS OF WAITING
Favorite ride-- Toy story mania and Jungle Cruise
Favorite place- Hollywood Studios (Jedi Training was a super big event)
Disney staff- A+++++ They were super accommodating and nice. I just think if I was in another lifetime I would totally work there.
Disney's rules for handicapped-- My mom needed a wheelchair mid way thru the trip. It was unreal how much they accommodated her and us. Kudos to them for that.
Disney's magic on my life-- A++++ -- my kid's are still talking about it and they want to go back. So all is not lost.

So we are finished with the trip. Positive thoughts now will always be in my mind. Praying that we can go again and do it differently....our way. We are going to try out the Disney Cruise next I think. Although right now--I am starting to mentally prepare myself for the epic DISNEY VACAY scrapbook. :)

Day three- HOLLYWOOD Studios

This was the day I was looking forward to. We had dining plan with Hollywood and Vine with the Disney Junior characters. My son's FAVORITE was little Einsteins. It would be my 2YO's 'justin bieber' moment. I had every camera ready!!! It was a great experience. All the characters came to the table and both boys were HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY to see them. There was a time when my 2YO rested his head on Leo's shoulder and closed his eyes in happiness. (WORTH IT ALL!!!!!!!!!)

Then we knew we needed to sign 4YO up for Jedi Training. So we did that. Then we did star tours. HOLY MOLY THAT WAS A W E S O M E. Just a super star wars fan growing up and it was just well done. 4YO was alittle freaked out and said to the guy next to him "get me outta here"...but in the end it was good. :0) Then it was right on to Toy Story Mania. MY favorite by far of all the rides in Disney. IT was awesome. Just great. I can't really explain it ...it one of those you just have to do it rides.

Indiana Jones stunt show--- AWESOME. Then it was off to see the characters-- we are pixar fans so we saw Monster Inc, Cars, Jake from Neverland Pirates, we also did the Muppets too.THEN...the moment of my 4YO's life....his shot at beating Darth Vader. As a mom of 2 boys, I don't get the princess experience so this was pretty close. All of us lined up with our cameras in hand to capture the moment. OH BOY-- it didn't disappoint. He battled Darth Vader with his light saber. All of cheered. What an AWESOME experience for a little boy.

After it was all over, I said to him "Oh MY Goodness, you beat Darth Vader!" He said, "No I didn't beat him, he's not dead. But I got a good fight." Yes, my boy, you did. PRICELESS.

SCI FI diner WIN WIN WIN...we LOVED IT the boys loved it kept them busy watching the movies. Really cool experience. Also they showed a Tom and Jerry movie. My 4YO's fave...bonus surprise. Then we stayed for the OSBOURNE Christmas lights. WOWSER. That was amazing....Pictures don't do it justice. My 4YO just said WOW. Got us right in the Christmas mood.

Day 4- our choice.

We asked the boys where they wanted to go. We went to all the parks really so it was up to them to pick the repeat park. I was thinking MK since we didn't see it all in our tired stupor. BUT they chose shocker-- HS again...to see the other shows we missed and to see Darth Vadar (again)....so we obliged.

We had to stop in to see the Playhouse Disney show--that was well worth it too. Bubbles from the ceiling, "treasure" falling from the ceiling..singing and dancing along. AGAIN-- my 2YO got to see his favorite people- Little Einsteins. He was in heaven.

We did get to see the Pixar Friends parade front and center with all of the Pixar movie people that was great. We missed alot of parades in all of our travles so I was happy we finally saw someothing. They LOVED it. They were waving and pointing. WORTH IT.

Day Two- Animal Kingdom/Epcot

We woke up early for first thing Animal Kingdom. Thank goodness my father in law purchased some cool Disney windbreakers for the boys because the weather was *gasp* 55 degrees?? Sorry Floridians, I guess we brought the Jersey weather to you. So it was a chilly start there. We went right to the Kilimanjaro safari-- it was great but we didn't have that good of a time since it was cold and most of the animals were "sleeping"/probably in shock over how cold it was. (Again, Six Flags has the wild safari too and we frequent there often...so my 4 year old kept saying that we can do that when we get home.)

Off to Dinoland- what a TREAT. They love dino and they love the boardwalk. SO that was a fun place. All the games of chances made us feel like we were back on the Jersey Shore boardwalk (minus the annoying Snookies :-) ) We were there for a while and decided to use our snack credit at some place with Ribs.

**Parent's worst Nightmare** My parents and DH went to buy the food, I stayed with the two boys for a seat. That is when 4YO decided to "run and find daddy" while 2 YO played with the ketchp. I was so stressed out so I bolted after 4 YO and the GREAT STAFF at Disney immediately jumped in and inadvertently babysat 2YO (who really didn't pay attention to the fact that I was gone running--he loved pumping the ketchup into cups).

DISNEY STAFF ROCKED (actually they rocked the entire trip but this was a super up for that.) So we were all there safe and sound---I, after suffereing a minor heart attack--was able to actually eat food. My DH stated that his ribs were the best ever so YAY Animal Kingodom - FLAME TREE BBQ- !!!

EPCOT was next...we hopped on the bus home to drop out stuff off and waited again for ANOTHER bus to take us to Epcot. **note to all** if you don't like busses stopping all the time around the hotel...Caribbean Beach is NOT for you. For a family that was just tired and traumatized from the way in more waiting and bus stops just made us unhappy.

EPCOT-- Hmm, C R O W D E D. Food and Wine festival there. Looked cool, but my oh my, just too many people. With a trauma of my bolting kids in the crowd already I just couldn't do it again. But we had dining reservations there so we stayed and did some attractions. It was fun, but really not a place for a 4YO and 2YO.

Dining- Rose and Crown. HOLY MOLY--MORE WAITING. I swear we must have waited there to get served for THREE HOURS. Three hours of my life and disney wasted to eat average food. Waitress was really nice and gave the boys some light-up buzzes so that was good. But three hours COME ON. It was horrible. HORRIBLE. Again, Crankiness level was UP again on all of us. Boys, parents, DH, and yes. even me-- Positive Polly.

We desperately wanted to see more and do more. So FINALLY we were done. Everyone dispurses and did they own thing. I was determined to see more things at Epcot since half of our day was spent siting at a restaurant. So we did the character spot (more waiting but worth it in the end) and Nemo / Crush thing. I LOVED it. "DUDE!" My 4YO was cracking up at the silly Crush jokes...so again it made the frustration of a 3 hour dining meal melt.

Day two summary-- AK good, Flame Tree BBQ- AWESOME (and staff at AK even more AWESOME for staying with my kid) Epcot (eh) ROSE and CROWN EPIC EPIC fail. Crush the turtle-- DUDE it was totally tubular. :)

Guest Post: Our First Disney Trip (Part 1 of 4)

Where to begin? I have been happily dreaming of a Disney vacation for quite some time now with my 2 boys ages 4 and 2. My DH hasn't been to Disney EVER and its been quite some time since I went. But when I thought about it and discussed with some people I was advised to wait until they were older. But some people were convincing us that we needed to go while the "magic" was still there.

Finally, my husband dropped the ball and decided to book our trip. It was in August that the whirlwind of events took place- where to eat, when to go, where to stay, what to do. BOY is it EXHAUSTING and stressful. So we just left it up to a travel agent who did it ALL for us. Great BUT not great at the same time. (Will explain later about that one)

So it is all booked. We would go in November when the entire state of NJ has off for their teacher's convention. (I am a teacher in NJ and yes, I have actually used this time off to go to the convention and attend workshops...this year though was about family!) We also decided to include out grandparents and uncle in this trip too. Great idea (sort of). Well, apparently I missed the memo that EVERYONE IN NJ goes to Disney like us.So we were booked at Caribbean Beach Resort (sounded great-- Beach, Resort, paradise, on Disney property (busses to parks!))

Dining plans- and booked character meals at Crystal Palace, Hollywood and Vine, and table at Epcot Rose and Crown. Flights late at night out of Philly airport. SO lets break it down.

Flight there:

We were so excited to go. The boys were excited, I over packed, got the Ipod ready, the portable DVD player ready for hte plane, gummi worms for the boys ears. AND we arrived 2 hours before hte flight, right? Isnt' that what your supposed to do nowadays for planes?? Not a good idea....super hyped up kids. RUNNING around the airport terminal picking up ancient phones in the phone booth to talk on them (yes, I santized their hands afterwards)....Basically, that was the precursor of our trip with 2 little boys-- chasing, chasing, worrying about where they were. The other people waiting must have HATED us boarding that flight silently thinking "Please don't let these kids be seated near us...." OFF we went, my DH's fear of flying and all. Not a bad flight at all. We landed. So I guess its a start.

Orlando Airport:

Unfortunately, we missed the "magical express" bag delivery timing because our flight was in past 10pm. So we had to get our luggage ourselves off the belt. Thus negating the whole fact of magical express. We had to then shlept ALL of wheelie luggage 2 strollers and loads of carryons to the next line for Caribbean Beach resort. We are waiting for that bus (exhausted from the plane) to take us to the resort. Then we hear people saying "OH, it takes about 45 minutes to get to the hotel" WHAT?? 45 mintues?? Are you kidding me? We didn't know that. So here we are, 2 little ones shlepting onto a bus tired and cranky (and the kids are too), watching a video about the awesome time we are going to have. OK, lets just get there. NOTE TO SELF--- book an earlier flight PERIOD.

Check-in:

COMPLETE and UTTER NIGHTMARE--- Didn't do much research after our agent booked it for us. We thought we would just love it. NOTE TO SELF- not a good idea. We were all tired now its now 12am. We are super tired. Just want to check in. So we wait on this LONG LONG line. WHY is the line long?? OH, because they decided to have ONE computer working for check in. There was a line out the door because most of the the people that got off our flight checked in to our hotel. Finally about an inch of motion in the line (remember 4 and 2 year old of crankiness---) we are next. We had specifically asked for our rooms to be together and to get a crib for my 2 year old. We were told YES, my agent also called we were told YES.

SO, when I was in front of the guy and triple checked that info...what was I told NO!! "No sorry, we could accomodate you but you are a building away from each other and you'll have to wait for the crib" ITS NOW 1am my sons (and adults) NEED TO SLEEP. We get a shuttle to our room because OF COURSE where we checked in is NO where near walking distanct so we shlept and wait again. THEN we realize that Caribbean Beach Resort has NO ELEVATORS. So we must SHELPT ALL LUGGAGE UP STAIRS AT 1am.Crib doesn't come until 2am. YES. that is right. 2am. So we didn't sleep until 2am. What a first night??!! Right.

Day one-- Magic Kingdom

Great place. It was overwhelming to say the least though with just the amount of tourists. Seeing the castle up so close is just AMAZING/Breathtaking to say the least. We took about a million pics. But then we started walking around. I didn't know where to go and none of us knew where to go so we just followed the crowd. Dumbo ride LOOOONG wait so we passed. Frankly, the boys didn't care either since we have passes to Six Flags Great Adventure and can ride the Bugs Bunny Planes anyway. :)

We headed to the jungle cruise and pirates of the caribbean. LOVE THEM BOTH. I don't remember much of anything else since we were SOO SOO tired from the day before. I think that long day spoiled day one of the trip. ALL of us were cranky and really just couldn't get over the fact that we had just a horrible experience--all that positive thoughts about going there and all the dreams for going there. POOF up in flames bc of poor flight times and poor hotel service and lots and lots of waiting.

I, for one, Positive Polly wasn't about to let this spoil our day though so we trucked on. Crystal Palace for our dining experience. It was great and to see our boys' faces for the characters--priceless. Even my husband enjoyed it for his birthday. :)

Back to the pool we went, and just destressed from the long day and actually, we bypassed all the parades and shows....for our own sanity, we just wanted to rest and get some sleep. I think that was the best decision. Maybe again we'll go and see the electric light parade-- but with a 4 and 2 year old and lack of sleeping for 24 hours---I think we made the right call.

Exciting Week!

I am preparing this post ahead of time - so that it will hopefully post without a hitch!

I hope that your Christmas was spectacular! I can tell you that ours was crazy (even before the fact!) We host Christmas Brunch at our house at 11 a.m. for my side of the family. Hubs' side has dinner planned ... at 2:00 p.m. I think we may be a little late!! We'll see. I'm still running behind schedule for my wrapping so fingers crossed that it all got finished in time and everyone was happy!!

The Christmas Tree @ Wilderness Lodge 11/11

This week, I am featuring a guest post series about a first trip to Disney! My friend Ali Z. and her family took their first plunge to the World during the first week/weekend in November. During our NJ Teachers Convention weekend. Our schools shut down for two days (generally the first Thursday and Friday of November) so that the teachers can attend their annual convention which takes place in Atlantic City

Their cast of characters were: Mr. & Mrs. Z (both teachers!), their 2 sons who are 2 and 4, and their inlaws.

Since we are a little freakish about Disney, I thought it would be cool to have someone else give their perspective on a Disney trip, especially a first trip. Disney can be overwhelming (even to veterans)! Disney can also be loads of fun and have many special *magical* moments.

Celebrating in Heaven.

Stressing over the holidays? I certainly am ~~not~~. It's not like they snuck (is that a word?) up on me or did any kind of stealth tactic Still the same time, year after year after year. The difference? This year we were away, on the Disney Dream, over Thanksgiving and the official "kick off" of the Christmas shopping season. (I am not complaining!) I am just saying that being out of touch with internet for a few days and therefore out of touch with the shopping madness reality, put a few kinks in my schedule.

Couple that with my best friend since childhood losing her baby brother at the age of 34 last week. He was laid to rest yesterday. And I was at work. Where I didn't want to be. I wanted to be able to be there. To help. To give strength if the family needed it. I was able to go to Michael's viewing Tuesday night. It was apparent that he was as well loved in his adulthood as he was in his childhood. I remember him fondly from weekends spent at Laura's house. Both of her brothers, and her parents too, became part of my extended family because we spent so.much.time together. It was nice. I didn't have any brothers. As much as Laura thought they were bothersome, I thought having brothers was cool (only two girls in our family) and tried to always make time for them. Not a lot of time (that would have been weird) but a simple conversation here or there. Or even just a hello.

Michael - he was a jokester. At home. At school. Wherever. He had a personality that was infectious. The photos shown of him at the funeral home Tuesday night reflected that. He leaves behind not only his son but his long time girlfriend, his mother, his sister and his brother. The viewing was on the 18th anniversary of his father's passing. Really, does this family need any more grief at what is supposed to be a happy time? While I enjoyed seeing the photos of the man he had become and the life he was living, I was happy to see the photos of him as a young boy - the boy I remember so fondly. (The dogs I remember hanging out with too: "hi misty - hi sandy") The photos of him grinning and playing ... the family photos. The picture of the three children that they had done when they were *almost* grown up. (Really, when are we all the way grown up??)

The sobs that came out of my bestie...they tore at my heart. I would give anything to take away her pain, her grief, her sorrow and sense of loss. I've said it many times to her in many different ways: I hope that she feels the love she is surrounded with here - and the love that emanates from the heavens above for you. You are not walking this walk alone. I will do anything for you and your family ~ just say the word. Michael is now celebrating this Christmas with your Dad - the first one in 18 years!

May you rest in peace Michael. Thank you for making me a part of your family all those years ago. And, most of all, thank you for leaving your mark on all of our hearts.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

It's been quite the crazy week! How often have I repeated that same sentence?

Last weekend saw Twink's first gymnastics "team" competition. She didn't place but she did a great job. Scoring an impressive 6.8 on the vault, which she hates! She did really well in my eyes. I cannot imagine the pressure she felt going in to that competition. It was a long day. Luckily, my mom drove since she used to live in the area of the gym where the competition was held and I had my own personal navigator. A big thank you to her for going with us, driving and missing her scheduled "girls night out" with her friends because the day was extra long and the team girls wanted to get dinner before we came home -which they certainly earned with all of those hard hours of competition in. Thanks Mom!! We really appreciate it!!

Then, this past Wednesday night, my sister in law hosted her annual Christmas Ornament (Holiday decoration) exchange. That is always a load of fun, this year especially. D put out a fabulous spread and introduced me to 14 (12?) Hands red wine. YUM! The ladies that attend this exchange are fun to be with any day and especially fun when we exchange the ornaments and steal the gifts from one another. Another huge thank you to my SIL for hosting such a fun night out. (Too bad the weather was crappy!!) I came home with a really cute present luminary and I can't wait to put a candle into it to see how pretty it looks all lit up!

On Sunday, we picked out and brought home our Christmas tree. My hubs lovingly put it up last night and if the kids can get all of their homework done and we can have a relatively calm dinner tonight, we'll decorate it tonight. "IF" got it? No promises. But I do promise that I will post photos when we finally get it all done.

I can tell you that the kids were super excited about the tree coming into the house. So excited that they thought they didn't need to do last night's homework. That they were exempt because the tree was coming in and going up. Not so in my book. "IF" they do not get their stuff done today, that tree will sit there, with lights only, until this weekend when we are "off" on Saturday (after we take Guinness to the vet.) Don't you agree? When do you put your tree up and decorate it? On a school night? Or on the weekend when you can all enjoy the task at hand and get into the spirit??

I may have her on two days instead of one day --- we'll have to see how it goes. She recently went to Disney for the first time with her family and is going to tell us all about her trip with her husband, her in-laws and her two little boys!! “The program has finally gotten me on the treadmill to attempt running; I’m trying!”

At my work, we are doing a weight loss challenge. Seems that many of us are "too busy" for exercise. (That is my excuse. All of mine are: too busy (work/kids' schedules/homework/etc.), tired, lazy. There I admitted it. Laziness.) This week, however, I weighed in 4 pounds lighter than the week before. Why? I cared. I asked questions about what I ate. I moved. Maybe not as much as I should have but I definitely did more moving than the week before.

Unfortunately, I will be on vacation when the weekly results are announced. I do, however, think I have an excellent chance at winning this week. We will finish up our challenge just before Christmas break and then will probably start up another after the first of the year. You know, like all good people who make the New Year's Resolution to "be more healthy." With CafeWell, we may no longer have a reason to not be more healthy.

What I thought:

A quick and easy read for the young and old, with about 45 pages. This book will tickle the "scary" bone of your young chapter book readers. A wonderful mystery book! My daughter is in the fourth grade and was excited to get started after I finished reading this book on the iPad. She is about halfway through it in 3 fifteen minute reading sessions. (Probably more - I can't tell because she let the battery die in the iPad yesterday while reading!) The plot wasn't too hard to understand and the words were "just right". If there are a few words they have trouble with, it is easy for them to come ask for help (and for you to provide it without consulting the dictionary!)

A lot of fun at Halloween time or anytime!! It does not have a Halloween theme to it, other than the Vampire, as did the other books have that I have recently reviewed.

What I thought:

Creepy doesn't even begin to describe this book! Although not gory, it has a unique scariness to it. If it was a movie, I'd have had my eyes closed through most of it! Step-siblings thrown in an old, reportedly "haunted" house, while their parents honeymoon across the country ... hidden secret passageways within the house ... a cemetery in their backyard ... and it's Halloween!

I loved this book, even though I was afraid to turn the page sometimes. I think that it is a good YA book, better for kids in early high school years and late middle school - I have a 5th grader and a 4th grader - I think they'd have enjoyed this as a movie but the book is a little above their reading level.

If you're looking for a spooky, Halloween book for your kids to read (while the East Coast is bracing for snow this Halloween weekend,) I definitely recommend adding this to your reading list!!

I enjoyed this book thoroughly - my Grandfathers were both in the War, one in the Army in Europe and one in the South Pacific serving in the Navy. The time period interests me immensely as neither man is still alive to share their stories with us. Too, I learned of "snow homes" for the children who lived outside of city limits and still attended the local schools. Not only was I reading for enjoyment, but I also learned quite a bit.

Franklin's Halloween - A book review

Just in time for Halloween! I was asked by the publisher to read and review this e-release, Franklin's Halloween: A Classic Story.

Released again, in a digital format, Franklin's Halloween is a tale that will not disappoint your little ones. My preschooler is three. She loved this book. We received a copy via the publisher on Netgalley.com. We were able to download it into our Ipad,, using the Bluefire reader. The graphics were wonderful and the story was classic Franklin.

We loved reading about Franklin picking his Halloween costume and following him to a Halloween party with his friends and family. All of our favorites were included - Beaver, Fox, and even Bear (although we later learn Bear was sick!) My little one loved the Haunted House scene and enjoyed picking out the different details in illustrations. She did, however, point out that the party was missing a pinata. Maybe next time?

What I thought: I though this book was very, very interesting. I was raised Catholic and have since all but left the Catholic church in favor of something ... something that I thought was missing. I found my husband's Methodist Church to be welcoming and breathing.

Recently, our Pastor spoke of the situation Pastor Tyler Edwards points out in Christianity - the Walking Dead - but our Postor didn't quite say it the way Pastor Tyler does. A problem in the Church of people coming to church or finding reasons to not worship with a church ... it is seen everywhere and our Pastor pointed out that the "christians" are the problem, as does Pastor Tyler.

This book draws a wonderful parallel between Christians who are just "doing Church" and not "living Church." It also gives details on how to ensure that you and your congregation are not among the living dead. I guess the problem started long ago…. You see, I havealways loved miniature things. My good friend Sam would tell me that I have the“little disease.” When I was young, I collected Strawberry Shortcake dolls.Herself the Elf? Had her too. Oh, and those 80’s fashion dolls, Glamour Gals,that were like tiny mutant Barbies—loved them! Teensy shoes, wee wardrobes,bitty brushes—I even had a palm-size baby doll. I had so many wonderful minichildhood treasures... and that brings me to the crux of the matter: a tinydoll named Caramellie and her little sundae-shaped house. My favorite toy ever and the impetus for Cat’s riotousadventure in 2 Days ‘Til Sundae.

I am certainly not Catherine, but she is a part of me—thepart that has a sentimental streak a mile wide and a penchant for the dramatic.And like her, I know how it feels to lose what you thought was safely storedaway. When I graduated from high school and left home for college, I didn’trealize that I would never go back to Jersey, so I left many things behind. Ihopped a plane to GA with the clothes on my back and a couple of suitcases inbaggage and shipped the rest of what I truly needed through UPS. I was eighteenat the time, living in a dorm; I couldn’t bring along my younger self and allher collections! And then I was married and living in a tiny apartment; Ididn’t have room for all those memories! But by the time we moved into a realhouse, with an attic and extra rooms, it was already too late. It turns outthat one person’s treasure is actually another person’s trash—sounds a lot lesshopeful and promising that way, doesn’t it?

So I can relate to Catherine’s plight. And further, I cancertainly attest to getting the occasional post-auction crazies when someonesnags a win out of my clutches in the last seconds, although as of this point Ihave never actually hopped a plane to claim what I feel is rightfully mine…. Inthat respect I have to envy Cat’s guts and gumption, and I sure enjoyed goingalong for the ride.

To be fair to my parents, even though many of my treasuresare still MIA to this day, how can I hold a grudge when 2 Days was born out of that loss? Besides, it turns out that my Caramellie has finally been accounted for.It seems she’s been “homeless” and naked (probably since the 80’s—it was a wildtime), living in a box (a Herself the Elf box) with several other tiny misfitdolls. She deserves better.

Now I find myself closer to Cat than ever, trolling theantiques and garage sale circuits and searching eBay late at night, in hopes offinding a new or used sundae house. Meanwhile Caramellie waits patiently in aplace of honor on a bookshelf in my office, reminding me that sometimes a storycan come from the most unlikely of places…. And that “little disease” Imentioned earlier? That is alive andwell and manifests itself in a quasi-obsession with Christmas ornaments. ;-)

Tweens / Hormones? Oh my!

As I struggle to be the (good) Mom of a 9 year old girl and 10 year old boy, I have to tell you that I insist that "hormones" are flying all over our house like no other matter could. And the 3 year old? Let's not go there right now (since she thinks she is 15.)

Now, I know that some of you are thinking that I'm giving away TMI with this post, but really - when should I be expecting the hormones in the kidlets to hit the fan? I need to know. I've been wondering but not doing too much research. I've been tapping into minds of other moms, although I do not ask for advice easily. The general consensus: yes, it's hormones (both of them) and no, it's not going to be over anytime soon.

With that tidbit of information, I'm sure that I should be planning my responses to both kids with more empathy. With more patience. With more compassion. Alas, I have not. And, I'm a little upset with myself about it.

Today, I received an email from a newsletter to which I subscribe. There was an article called "Holy Hormones" which I think you will enjoy, especially if you are struggling with this in your homes.

I would love to hear what everyone else who has tweens in their lives is going through - and how to best handle the outbursts, tears and screams. (please?)

Disney's The Lion King - 3D

Today, SweeTart's preschool took a field trip because so many of the "siblings" of the preschoolers had the holiday off from school. They invited us all to a local screening of Disney's The Lion King - in 3D.

This movie was originally released in 1994 and was critically acclaimed (way back) then. Many famous men and women lend their voices to the characters in this movie: James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Whoopi Goldberg to name a few. And the soundtrack for this movie? Unbelievable!!!! Elton John!!! DinoBoy slept with this soundtrack playing a continuous loop all night long for YEARS. Even now when he hears the "Circle of Life," he says "isn't this from that CD?"

Child sized 3D glasses are what were handed to my by one of my wonderful daughters - and they worked! The movie was phenomenal! I cannot say enough good things about it. We've owned the movie since ... 1995? We upgraded from VHS to DVD when the older kidlets were younger. The VHS tape got a little worn out but the DVD is still playing well. I have to admit that I do have the new 3D version on order (it includes a digital copy that I can put on the iPad / iTouch, etc. for mobile viewing as well and will release on 10/4/11.) It was hard not getting up and sing with Simba when he was belting out "I just can't wait to be King" but I did manage to keep it under control.

It was definitely worth seeing on the big screen. A shout out to the wonderful ladies at A Child's Place for taking the time to set this trip up for us and inviting the entire extended families. We had a great time and can't wait for our next field trip!

While most of us are just greeting autumn, I'm pleased to present my review of "A Lancaster County Christmas" by Suzanne Woods Fisher (currently available in hardcover, Kindle, Nook, and Sony Ebook editions.)

Again, Suzanne Woods Fisher sucks you into the life of an Amish family, in this instance, a family we have met before in The Choice, Mattie and Sol Riehl. I loved returning to have a peek into the family they've become. Therein, lies the heart of the story. Their family.

Mattie and Sol had an unexpected visit from an "English" family on Christmas Eve in the middle of a terrible storm. A series of events leaves a husband and wife seeking shelter from a vicious winter storm with the Riehls, through the Christmas holiday. Both women, Mattie and Jamie, are hurting souls. They women lean on and learn from one another during their forced cohabitation. (Although, like most lessons, we don't realize they are lessons at first.)

In the end, we realize that everything happens for a reason. Don't question or doubt, for He is always with us. A strong message and a wonderful story. I loved each and every moment of this book!

When is it enough?

How much can one give before it is enough? That is the question of the hour in my head. How much can you put your neck on the line for someone else before it starts tripping you up? How does helping someone out once (and for a stated amount of time) turn into an obligation and a responsibility? One that makes you feel guilty because at some point enough IS enough!?! Can they not see that far in front of their nose that they are not the center of the world? That they are owed NOTHING and that I need to give NOTHING? I have my own situations that need to be handled, without the cry of unfairness, bitterness and pulling on the heartstrings. If they'd have opened their eyes and paid attention to anyone but themselves in the past couple of years they'd have realized it. They have relied on the support from over here for too long. I am at the breaking point.

Have you seen my Zen? I have found it misplaced in the past -- the past 2 weeks especially -- finding it is especially trying. We're busy as can be as a family unit. Baseball and gymnastics in the evening. Homework after school and in the evening. Meals. Private time (seriously?) I've become an anxious worry wort. I am struggling to find peace. Zen. Whatever you want to call it: I need it. Desperately.

While searching for it, I found this blog post from 2007 on the Daily Devotional Blog (which I hadn't seen before my search.) I love it. I am not sure that I can wrap my head around the entire concept right now but I get it. Kind of. I need to get it. I need to be able to cast my fears/worries/anxieties on God because I am not strong enough to do this by myself, even with the strength of my family. Recently, my hair began falling out again - terribly. Which I think is a physical manifestation of the anxiety I'm carrying around. Someone is telling me that I have got to slow down, lessen the load and breathe.

But I still need to know: when is it okay to say enough?

Scrap Getaway Weekend?

A winter weekend at Flanders Hotel in Ocean City, NJ. The weekend begins at noon on Friday til around 4 on Sunday in January filled with fun, scrapping, food (holy moly is there good food, and so much of it,) friends and fun. Oh wait, I already said fun. Pack up your current scrapbook project or pick a new project for the weekend. Feel free to stay up late or sleep in as long as you want. Scrap as little or as much as you want! You can even shop while you're there!! Vendors - scrapbook vendors and others are there - it is truly a great weekend.

Feel free to ask me any questions or fill out the contact form on their website. A fabulous group of ladies put this together each year, and each year it seems to get a little bigger and better than the year previous.

I have to say that I am fond of staying in my pajamas for the entire weekend and drinking from a sippy cup instead of filling sippy cups and telling children to get out of their pajamas because we have so many places to go, people to see ... you get that, right?

That is the sneak peek of what I'll be working on. Surprised? I didn't think so!

Again, I have to tell you, I am an iPhone kind of gal. Hubs has his cell phone plan through the business so I just stuck with my own company, one that I have had forever and haven't really thought of giving up - until now.

Have I told you that my 4th grader was stuck on the school bus for 1.5 hours coming home after the first day of school? If I broke down and got her a phone, I wouldn't have been half as worried as I was. No credit checks. No activation fees. No cancellation fees. Seems simple enough. I can get a monthly plan or pay as I go with Tracfone cards that I can purchase at the store.

And, not just junky phones either. Tracfone offers phones from all of the "better" cell phone companies including LG, Samsung, Nokia and many others. The phones aren't that expensive! They begin at less than $10 and can include things like a QWERTY keyboard, web access, texting and app capabilities, phone/video capabilities and the list goes on and on. Not a "cheap" featureless phone by any means. So many features

Leaving the country anytime soon? Have your kids call you from their Tracfone. International calling to select countries is included in your minute allocation. Seriously. There is also an International Neighbors program where you can provide friends and family in Mexico and Canada with a local number in those countries to reach your Tracfone in the US. (Good for our international workers!)

To sum it up - I am thinking of switching. Really. With both kids asking for phones for Christmas, it just seems like the sensible thing to do. We all know me. Sensible. Ok, maybe not but these people are: Real TracFone customers

Outer Banks - What a Week!

Every year, we do an annual trek from New Jersey (where the beaches are beautiful but crowded beyond belief) to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Hatteras Island in particular. This has been our summer vacation for the past 8 years. Generally, we have gone with other families, sharing a large, beautiful beach house (they're called "cottages" but I don't know how - most are beautiful, three or four stories {some with elevators!} and certainly not what I would consider a cottage.) This year, however, we were on our own ... but we made the best of it!

A week before our scheduled departure of 7/9/11, we finally booked our cottage. Not for lack of trying, though. We had been giving offers of $1,500 for the week for homes that were priced way above that. Once you add the hotel tax, the NC tax and whatever extras the realtors were throwing on, you were at 15%+ above your weekly rental anyhow. I wanted to stay on a "budget" if you can call it that at all. Most realtors didn't even bother calling the owners with our offers. Outer Beaches Realty, however, was different. Not only did they call the owner directly with our offer, they called me back immediately and accepted our credit card over the phone as payment before the owner could "change their mind." We scored beautiful Pamlico Peace as our home for the week.

Our 8 hour drive down was uneventful after a horrendous storm in NJ the previous evening. We did hit residual rain while entering Hatteras Island but score again for Outer Beaches Realty ~ our home was ready when we presented ourselves at their offices at 1:30 p.m., far in advance of the 6:00 p.m. check in time. When we got to the home, we couldn't believe our eyes. We were right on the sound! We knew we would be but had no idea how spectacular it really was. The home was 3 stories: a locked first story with storage only; the second floor had 3 bedrooms, a den, a laundry room, 2 full bathrooms and a hot tub on the deck; the third floor had a living area, dining room, powder room, kitchen and master bedroom with full bath - and a beautiful deck for viewing the sunsets each evening. Wowza!

We enjoy going to Hatteras Island rather than other parts of the Outer Banks because it isn't yet too commercialized. There are 7 villages on the entire island: Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and, of course, Hatteras. We stayed in Frisco where we enjoyed beach access by the Billy Mitchell airport (yes, if you fly propeller airplanes!), driving our 4x4 right onto the beach and setting up camp each day. (Each day but Saturday and Thursday but who's counting?) Hatteras Island is home to one major supermarket chain, located in Avon but has a few other family owned supermarkets throughout the island. There is are two mini golf courses (on opposite ends of the island), the one in Frisco also has GoKarts. We treated the family to golf but saved the GoKarts til next year when everyone will be tall enough to drive their own. We found many ice cream shoppes! Surf shops, trinket shops, bait shops ~ you name it, they're up and down the island. Fast food? Nope! Locally owned restaurants (ok, one chain that I saw) are the norm, rather than the exception. Barbeque but mostly seafood are the specialties that are most often boasted on the road front signs.

The days we didn't head to the beach for the day? Saturday was our arrival day. The kids played in the sound while we visited with Tim's brother and sister in law who were leaving for NJ the next day. Thursday? We had a late start after a storm blew through while we were sleeping. It was a little to windy for the beach so we visited the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum which is so cool and we highly recommend it! We also took the time to explore the drive on beach in Hatteras, just at the tip of the island. Way cool. Made us realize that we can stay in Hatteras and be able to drive on beaches in either Hatteras or Frisco, where ever we feel like being that day with no problems.

During our Thursday drive on the Hatteras beach, our son asked if we could take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. Much to our surprise, my husband said yes! The kids were so excited. The wait wasn't long (as long as it could have been - my brother in law waited hours the week before) and we were able to be quickly seated at the infamous Howard's Seafood Restaurant (the kids' favorite because their meals are served on frisbees.) After lunch, a quick stop to Teach's Hole (a souvenir store focusing on mainly pirate type stuff) a drive by the lighthouse, we waited in line to get the ferry back to Hatteras Island. In years past, we've gone to the 4x4 beach on Ocracoke for an afternoon, after lunch at Howard's. This year, it was windy and we weren't prepared for it at all. Ocracoke is an artsy type island with many marinas, restaurants and crafty stores.

We even had professional photographs taken, right at our house by Daniel Pullen. We have used his services for the past few years and love his style and creativity with our family. He even came out knowing that Tim and I had pink eye and looked terrible. Said that he could "photoshop" that. NICE!

On Saturday, we woke up bright and early to begin our long drive home. It was sad to leave such a fun vacation but nice knowing that we'll be back next year! If you haven't been to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I highly recommend it!

I do have to say that we were more than lucky to have a wonderful vacation the 2nd week of July. Unfortunately, Hurricane Irene two weeks ago slammed Hatteras Island and breached their main road, Route 12 in quite a few places. The sea claimed more than one beautiful home and others have been comdemned. Locals are banding together to help each other with clean up and basic necessities. The kids have finally started back to school and they're going 6 days a week to make up for the lost time. The photos that I have seen via Outer Beaches Realty are amazing. I also wanted to direct everyone to Help 4 Hatteras, a group that has been created to donate money to the places and people on Hatteras Island who need it most. Please keep the people of Hatteras Island in your thoughts and prayers as they still struggle to get themselves, their businesses and their lives back to good.

Recipe Exchange: Shrimp Monterey

I recently started a private group on Facebook called "recipe exchange". It is simply that - we're exchanging recipes in hopes of expanding our menus and maybe making planning a little easier during the busy fall months ahead.

Below, I'm sharing a recipe from my SIL Denise and have added it to my lame Recipe page. I am hoping to get that updated more often. If you would like to participate in the exchange, please let me know and I'll add you into the group!

Shrimp Monterey

2 cloves garlic minced
2 tbs butter
2 lbs (Med.) shrimp ( i like 3) uncooked, peeled
1/2 cup white wine or chicken broth
2 cups shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
2 tbs minced parsley

Saute garlic in butter for 1 min
Add shrimp cook 8 min or until pink
place in baking dish (keep warm)
Add wine or broth to skillet, bring to boil cook for 5 min until reduced.
Pour over shrimp, top with cheese Bake @ 350F for 10 min

I serve with rice and a side salad.

Recently, I was selected to participate in this blog tour for Suzanne W. Fisher's newest release,Amish Values for Your Family: What We Can Learn from the Simple Life. Having read a few of her books (and reviewed them too!) previously, I can't tell you how excited I was to participate in this tour. I do admit, freely, that I was unsure of how I would tie this blog post into my life. We were asked to pick one chapter from the book and relate it to our own family life. There were so many lessons that I learned, it is very hard to just pick one to relate to. Ironically enough, the two that I am most torn between are: family vacations and the (a) circle of life. Could I be torn between two more different subjects? I guess I am having problems choosing because we experienced both this summer.

Let's go with Family Vacations and call it a post!!

We were introduced to our family vacation spot, the Outer Banks of North Carolina by my inlaws (Hubs' brother and his wife) way back when our oldest were both one. 8 years ago. Hard to believe it has been that long. (We skipped the year the kids were two but have been back every year since.) Specifically, we visit Hatteras Island.

When we first started going to the OBX (Outer Banks) it was a huge Hubs side of the family get together. We had many families going and staying in one extra large house. We would go to the beaches together during the day, build bonfires at night and hand out at our pool. We would take the ferry to Ocracoke Island and have lunch together at a local pub. Shop together for food and souvenirs.

In this chapter, Suzanne points out that "Sometimes, the simplest things in life are the very best." I agree wholeheartedly. While I enjoy our vacations to the heart of Florida, to Walt Disney World, I have to say that there is nothing I enjoy more then spending time together, as a family, on Hatteras Island. In the OBX, our children got the chance to know their cousins that were older than them and not seen as often as they would have if they were around the same ages. The got to know their aunts and uncles for a whole week and learned to love them more than they already do. They were part of a huge family, not our little network of 5. They learned to appreciate and respect their family members. On the flip side, the families without small children any longer, were able to enjoy the little ones: swimming, giggling, playing in the sand. Things their older children might not do as readily. The week was always filled with smiles and laughter.

Last year, we were down to just two families going down. We made the best of it and still had a great time! This year, the two families went down on separate weeks but were still able to get together one day to chit chat and hang out. It was awesome. Our vacation this year was a totally different experience for us, with only our family but we still made memories our children will hold dear.

I can only hope that our children love the slower pace of life and the unspoiled beauty offered on Hatteras Island and that they will continue to bring their families to vacation with us after they have grown. (On a separate note, please include our friends on Hatteras Island in your prayers as they struggle to recover after being dealt a terrible blow by Hurricane Irene last week.)

This is another book by Suzanne Woods Fisher that I absolutely loved. There were many stories - some funny, some sad, all full of life lessons that we can apply to our every day. What a better society I think we could be if we all just lived a little simpler.

Not only thorough, with instructions on how to make a few different types of crusts, but the variety of recipes is awesome. The photos included made my mouth water.

Even if you are not a very good baker, which I already told you, I’m not – this book might just be perfect for us. With its detailed instructions, photos and a variety of items to choose from, this cookbook might make me a very popular person after I start baking and taking to parties this summer.

It's definitely been a little crazy 'round here. A few weeks ago, Hubs and I participated in (ok, he participated in and I volunteered for) the Golf for Autism, a local golf outing which raises money for Autism Speaks. The fellas (and a few ladies) played 18 holes at the beautiful Indian Springs Country Club in Marlton, NJ. (Hey, are you in the local area - NJ/PA/DE/NY - and want to participate next year? Drop me a line and I will get you in touch with my friends who set the wonderful fundraiser up!) I've included a photo of the guest of honor, their son, Evan, who has Autism.

All proceeds from the golf outing, the beer sales (lol), the 50/50 and the silent auction all go to Autism Speaks. So far, the tally of funds raised is $4,000 and climbing. Golf for Autism will touch base when they have a final number in for the donation.

Beechwood Landscape Architecture and Construction was the Platinum Sponsor for the event. Besides building beautiful landscapes and "stay-cation" areas for homeowners to enjoy, they take pride in sponsoring community events that are close to their hearts. What I thought:

The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter by Frank Cole is a modern Indiana Jones type book. The main characters are 14 years old and in a cool private school. Amber loves her archaeology class and her teacher, Mrs. Holcomb - herein lies the problem. Mrs. Holcomb (prefers to be called Dorothy) goes missing and it is up to Amber and her friends to find the clues to bring her home safely.

A fun read that didn't disappoint. Most concepts in this book will be well handled and understood by the younger crowd. My kidlets will be in 4th and 5th grades this year and I believe they'd handle this book well and enjoy it too! (I'm sure if it was made into a movie too, no one in my house would complain!)

What I thought:

Amazing. I loved this book. Just the right touch of stubbornness and heroism in this romantic mix of Clay and Dara Rose. The setting was excellent too ... the era of stagecoaches, trains and sheriffs ... petticoats, horses and chivalry ...opening up the west ... opening up cold and closed hearts ...A Lawman's Christmas is book 14 in the McKettrick's series and is an excellent continuation or a wonderful stand alone book.

This book by Linda Lael Miller creates warm and loving characters (ok, there are some that you love to hate), beautiful and vivid scenes and moments that will make your heart melt. It will debut in hardcover and Kindle edition on September 27, 2011 and is available for pre-order now.

Today was Hard.

So, today, we said goodbye to my Grandfather. My Dad's dad. If you've been following my blog for any length of time, you'll know that my Dad passed away in 2005. So, Poppop buried his firstborn. Then in 2007, he buried his wife, my Mommom. Then, the next month in 2007, he buried his 2nd child, my uncle Jim. Now, much like Farmer and The Dell, Aunt Helen stands alone.

Granted, Pop was 91. He led a great life. He served in the 2nd World War. He raised his three kids in the same house that he passed in. He loved his 6 grandkids with all he had. He even had 5 great grandkids. The photo I posted yesterday for Wordless Wednesday was from when SweeTart was about a month old. She's now three. (and not so squishy anymore.)

My cousin HK and I are the same age, apart by a few months. I am the older. (She doesn't let me forget it.) For his birthday, she wrote Pop a poem celebrating him. It was awesome. They made copies and handed it out at the funeral Mass today. Some of the memories only include the first 4 grandkids - he used to take us to the park when it was hot (they had a baby pool there to cool off in.) He used to take us to Great Adventure and he went on all of the rides with us!! The Log Flume, the Runaway Train, Roaring Rapids (hell, even Mommom went on Roaring Rapids sometimes it was so hot!!) there wasn't really a ride he would deny us. He would trap squirrels in his backyard (humanely, of course) and we'd go with him to release them in a wooded area not far from their house. Every time we'd ride down the road near the woods with Mommom and Poppop, we'd yell "hi happy, hi happy, hi happy" because he always told us that the squirrels were much happier in the woods than in his backyard (messing with his garden!)

I have foggy memories of going to the boardwalk with him, just to ride the carousel. I remember walking into my Great grandmother's apartment in her later years and him yelling "yoohoo" up the stairs to let Nan and Aunt Hon know we were there (a doorbell? not in the late 70s.) I remember him doing his "softshoe" dance - whenever and where ever - he always seemed so happy. Sitting at his kitchen table, I remember Mommom making me a bacon omelet (which I have never, ever been able to replicate, as much as I try) and having coffee and buttered crackers with Poppop. I remember him teaching us, as soon as we were able to count, to play 21 for his pennies. Sometimes we even brought our own but it was much more fun winning his pennies. I remember games of Kerplunk in the middle of his living room. I remember sitting on his lap and reading the Sunday funnies and listening to the Phillies game on the little red transistor radio he had.

Did you know that the Grimm fairy tales used to be in the Encyclopedias? I remember him reading to us for what seemed like hours. Did you know that the story wasn't just Snow White? Snow White and Rose Red. So there. Ok, maybe they were separate stories but why didn't Disney love Rose Red just as much? I will have to go back and revisit.

So many very special memories but the one that I hold closest and most dear is one from more recent years. The one when our second born, Twink, arrived a month ahead of schedule and was in the NICU for a few days before we were able to bring her home. Besides my Mom, Poppop was the only other family member who was brave enough to "scrub up" and visit with her inside of the NICU. The wires and tubes? The didn't intimidate nor scare him at all. He took her in his arms and loved her from the very beginning. I *wish* I had a photo of that moment. He was always so gentle and loving with each of the babies.

Witches - a Children's Book Review

A very cool book for little ones. You can be sure it will arrive just in time for the beginning of Halloween celebrations, with a release date of 8/15/11 (although Amazon is listing it as "available in 2-4 weeks." which is still plenty of time for Halloween celebrating!)

Vivid, bright and spooky (just the right amount of spooky for the littles) the story is short and cute. I must give the author and illustrator kudos for also including children with disabilities into their storybook. A light and airy story with photos of children making goodies and trick or treating. Children on two legs, children with crutches and children with wheelchairs. I love it! I teach my children to keep an open mind - that children with disabilities are no different than anyone else. I hope, if nothing else, that lesson sticks with them. I enjoy reinforcements on this lesson when and where ever I can get them! Don't delay, put your order in for this children's paperback seasonal story as soon as you can.

Apathetic - A Book Review

I recently had the opportunity to read Apathetic, the newest release by author Heather Muzik. Having read Celia's Journey and 2 Days Til Sundae, I should tell you how much I was looking forward to it's ebook release. In a word, awesome!

In a few more words: creepy, crazy and spooky (not ghostly spooky, but the kind of spooky that haunts your dreams for a while.) Like Celia's Journey, Apathetic closely examines family dynamics - this time of the Marshall Family. Most people think of men being the "abusers" of the family. Not in this one. Chris Marshall is thrown for a loop when his wife, Victoria, becomes his worst nightmare - for him and his two daughters. Follow this family through their ordeals with Victoria ~ it's a page turner that you're sure not to forget anytime soon.

A few days ago, Heather took some time to chat with me. I asked her if she needed therapy herself after writing such a deep book. This makes me laugh out loud ... she indicated that she wrote 2 Days til Sundae, an airy and light hearted chick lit book to take the edge off. You can definitely compare and contrast the two works out of the same author. Must be true that writing is good therapy!!! PS: Keep in mind that this book is not happy-go-lucky like 2 Days til Sundae ~ it is utterly blood curdling and jaw dropping at times. Be prepared!

Right now, I am in deep with my iPhone 4. Not that I don't love it. But I can almost smell the extra cash that will be in our bank account if I can give it up ... Now that we're closing in on the end of July and I should have tons more posts up and book reviews completed ... I don't. Epic. Fail. I am making a list today (during my lunch) of all of the books I have received from both publishing houses, publicity groups and netgalley.com during the past few months. Ones that I have read and have not read. I will get that list up here and will be accountable for all of the reviews I need to write. Whew. I will also be creating (again) a weekly meal plan. Should I post that here too? Or maybe on the Cozi.com calendar? At least then Hubs will know where to go to find out "what's for dinner." LOL

I've been flying by the seat of my pants lately when it comes to dinner. Part of it is because I am still getting used to my "new" summer hours. We work 4 days a week in the summer, for extended hours. Not too much longer but I now leave the office at 4:15/4:30 each day instead of 3:30/4:00. Small time difference that it is, it makes a ton of difference when fighting traffic on the way home, figuring out what is for dinner and who has to be where and when. (Thankfully, it appears that we're only running to gymnastics during the week now that baseball has ended for the summer.)

I also have to finish making items from the toddler cookbook from Once A Month Mom so that I can tell you how delicious everything is and sending you her way by the thousands (dozens?) Busy busy busy.

Seriously, I've been reading like a fiend. I have been a little slow on posting reviews which is BAD. Which is also why my blog is inundated with book reviews at present. And, either fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, there are more to come! I've been reading all types of books over the past few weeks. What has everyone else in the fam been up to, you ask?

Well, for starters, school is out!! We have kidlets who will be entering 4th and 5th grades in the fall. I am very proud of them both! Our newest 5th grader pulled all As, Bs and 1 C on his final report card. Not bad!! Twink, all A's. Pretty impressive for what was a challenging school year for both of them. They're both still busy kidlets. DinoBoy (I can't help but still call him that even though he is so not into dinosaurs anymore) is busy playing District Baseball, a select team of 9U players from our town who are playing in tournaments this summer. This is his first year trying out for the team. He's happy that he made it and I'm hoping that he overcomes some of his baseball fears - he can do so well - but he needs to connect the bat with the ball a little more often (for his father's sanity as well as his own confidence!!) Twink made her gymnastics team, officially. She is no longer pre-team and is learning new routines for competitions which will be in the winter and spring.

The Potty Update: Things are moving right along with SweeTart (knock on wood!!) She seems to not have ~~any~~ many accidents in her big girl panties these days. One of the problems we have, sometimes, not all the time, is the bowel movements. She will now sit herself down on her potty and try to poop. Unless she is otherwise preoccupied (at the pool for instance.) So I do have to say that the doctor was right, I think she'll be fully potty trained by the end of the summer. Whew! I was a little concerned about that one.

The Hubs: Still busy as ever!! Have you checked out their website? http://www.beechwoodlandscape.com/ They're operating out of Southern New Jersey but currently have jobs going on in two other states as well. He's been working crews 7 days a week for the past .... at least month ... probably longer than that. I think this past Sunday was the first Sunday he's taken "off" in over a month. If you count stopping by the shop after Church yesterday to "check on things" and "water the plants."

The dogs. Do you care? I'll tell you anyway. Guinness broke into Yoda's food container last night while we were at DinoBoy's game and proceeded to dine on freeze dried grasshoppers, crickets and various veggies. He then proceeded to drink half of the bowl of water - out of the toilet; guess he was full after that!! Maybe we have found the perfect diet for him? Dried food for the lizard. Nice. Jack bum back legs. More specifically: knees the size of softballs on both sides. He has been on an anti-inflammatory and pain meds for 2 months now. Problem is, when the medicine is working he acts like his crazy self, running through the yard and after the neighbor kids. When the meds wear off or after a particularly fun day of chasing rabbits, he tries to balance himself on his front two paws. Seriously, its breaking my heart.

What I thought:

To be completely honest, I wasn't sure what to think when I started this book. I was thinking more along the lines of the movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark or National Treasure ... while the Constantine Codex was not like either of those, it did not disappoint. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves espionage, a little cultural debacle, and who doesn't mind learning a little bit more about the Holy books of all religions in the meantime. (Not a lot - but enough to make it interestng.) Once the book got going, I found it hard to put it down.

I think it's a great job and I completely appreciate what teachers do...so so thankful...but I just do not have the patience. And dealing with all those parents who think their kids are perfect??? Yikes.... Huge kudos to all those teachers out there! :)

After that career dream faded, I wanted to be a beautician. I wanted to do hair, makeup, nails, everything. I practiced on one of those Barbie heads. I loved makeup...had tons of it, and me and my friend would get all glammed up when we did sleep overs. At least this dream was a little more in the right direction...it was creative. I had always been a creative kid...doing crafts and such.

I can't remember how I changed my mind, maybe it was starting high school. I'd been accepted into a Horticulture program at a vocational high school. I'd wanted to go to that school and playing with plants sounded fun. It was there I first learned floral design and I really liked it. New career: floral designer!

Flash forward about fourteen years and I had already worked for several years in flower shops as a designer and ran my own business out of my home specializing in wedding flowers. But I just didn't love it anymore. Couldn't find one specific thing...it was many small reasons...but I knew I was done. The love and passion for it had been replaced with something else. I wanted to pursue a writing career.

If there's anything in this world that I believe with my whole being is that we need to be happy with our lives, our careers. I know that doesn't always happen for everyone...we need money to live and sometimes our dream jobs are unattainable for one reason or another and we need to do what we have to do to buy the necessities. But I always encourage people to find happiness wherever they can. Life is way too short to be miserable.

A heartwarming book which I highly recommend for anyone who loves historical romances! Especially if you enjoy a strong woman lead character and a male counterpart who is her equal - not her superior - given the setting of this novel. I was entertained and enlightened throughout the entire book - I was not able to put it down! I cannot recommend this book any more highly.

The Poisoned House - A review

I recently had the opportunity to read The Poisoned House by Michael Ford. This is a Victorian Ghost story aimed at ages 13+ which will be released for summer reading on August 1, 2011 and is available now for preorder on Amazon.com.

I'm all about scary stories and this is a good one for the younger kids. It took me a little bit to get used to the fact that the book is set in the mid-1800's and also in a different country but I enjoyed the book thoroughly. It was a page turner and I think that girls and boys alike will take to this book. There are different elements in this story - apparitions, freezing cold rooms, and hidden secrets that keep the book moving right along and keep the reader in suspense throughout. There is always a villain too - this one was unexpected!!

Twink is 9 - How did that happen?

Yesterday, Twinkletoes turned 9. I cannot believe it. Far as I am concerned, this photo could have been taken yesterday! That would have put her at about 10 pounds instead of pushing 65 and a few weeks old instead of the ripe old age of 9.

This next picture was taken just a week or two ago. See the difference? All grown up. 9 years old. A member of t he JOGA team at her gymnastics academy. A big sister. A little sister. A girl who loves to laugh, draw and play. Loves to hang out with her friends. Loves to do her homework and excel in school. Loves to swing. Loves to swim and ride her bike. Loves to love. She's given us a lot of love in the past 9 years. I hope she knows how much we love her. And appreciate all she does to make our lives whole (crazy but whole!!!)

We're entering the "tween" years. I think it might be kind of like entering the Twilight Zone. I don't believe I am ready yet for puberty, boy craziness or growing up in general. For that matter, I don't think her Daddy is either. We're going to be going through a lot of changes ... probably a lot sooner than we can even imagine. All I know is, I'm buckling in and enjoying the ride. Love you!!

Turkey Monster Thanksgiving

I recently had the opportunity to read Turkey Monster Thanksgiving by Anne Warren Smith. This book is aimed at 3rd through 6th graders and will be available in stores and online on September 1, 2011 for the first time in paperback.

A little about the book:

Nine-year-old Katie Jordan lives with her dad and three-year-old brother. This year, instead of celebrating Thanksgiving in their traditional way by eating pizza in their pajamas, Katie wants to create the perfect holiday and be just like a "real" family. But by Thanksgiving Day, Katie has invited guests Dad didn't expect, festooned the house with what may be poison oak, set the sweet potatoes on fire, and forced her little brother to face a dreadful turkey monster by himself. At the end, however, Katie, her family, and her guests sit down to a most unusual dinner—one that succeeds because it comes more from the heart than from fancy decorations and elaborate menus.

What I thought:

This book was not exactly what I expected. Certain parts of the story line, although are applicable to all families, I think I would want to shelter my 3rd grader from for a little longer. The main character, Katie, lives with her single dad and her toddler brother. Seems that Katie's mom has left her children and husband to chase her dream of being a famous country singer. Katie's friend and "competition" across the street lives with her dad as well; her mom died. Whew - I know that the world is a hard place and these type of situations happen every day in every walk of life - just not something I want my kids reading about, yet. My entering 5th grader? Yes, I think he could handle that part of the story line a little better than my younger one.

The story itself? Engaging. Deals with friendship, competition, the importance of family traditions (no matter what they are) and loving your family for who they are, not who you want them to be in a way that children can relate. Various scenes of the book are laugh out loud funny. If you do want your younger child to read it, I would read it aloud with them so that you can discuss parts of the story they may not easily identify with and for a little reassurance too with regard to death and divorce/abandonment.

Gardening

For the past few years, Twink and I have been trying to garden in the "blank" spaces between all of the beautiful bushes, trees, shrubs and flowers in our backyard. Since Hubs owns a landscape company, you can rest assured that the spaces that we've been utilizing are few and far between. And, our landscape is beautiful - but we wanted a garden.

I would buy the seedlings from the greenhouse at the school where I work and Twink and I would plant and nurture through the summer. We've gotten many, many tomatoes; one summer we were picking them by the bucketful. We've had cantaloupes, green peppers and a few hot peppers. Last year we didn't have much luck. Our squash and pumpkins fizzled. Our many cucumber plants yielded us 2 cukes. We didn't have quite as many tomatoes as we did the year before.

This year was supposed to be different. Hubs promised us a garden. In March. (You know before the onslaught of the busy season and working round the clock 7 days a week.) He even went as far as contacting his friend from school, many moons ago, who has a company in South Carolina called Verde Garden. (See their Etsy Shop) Verde Garden is a licensed and inspected facility who is authorized to ship agriculture to all 50 states. Verde Garden hooked us up with seeds this year! So many seeds. I was nervous that we wouldn't have enough garden to plant them in.

Twink was very conscientious about getting her seeds started inside. We got a little bit of a late start but we had at least 9 containers of all but a few things. (the most important one forgotten? tomatoes!!) We've been planting like mad ~ once again in the empty spaces we can find because we cannot find time to create the garden we had envisioned. That would require someone who knew where our irrigation is, a sod cutter and just time in general. Something you need for a garden. Something we are lacking.

About a week ago, while planting, Twink took the seeds we hadn't yet used off of our porch and outside. The seeds we hadn't used yet? WET. Which ones? TOMATOES. 3 different kinds. I'm a little on the devastated side. I planted all the seeds I could save into planters on the patio and in one of the beds. Yesterday, I came home to discover that Hubs' crews had left me beautiful new viney type trumpet flowers ~ in those same planters. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I think I'll enjoy them for now then get the laugh when and if those tomato seeds grow into the tomato plants I'm hoping for.

Did I mention that we have about 5 green beans that we can eat? And about 2 dozen radishes? All in planters. But ready to eat. We've planted 4 cucumber plants and 3 eggplant plants in a flower bed. They're not looking so hot. The plants that we haven't planted yet that are bunched together on a tote top, under the tree? Looking wonderful. I am seriously considering leaving them there to see if they'll produce any veggies. (Zucchini, Eggplant, Peppers, Yellow Squash, etc.) What do you think?

PS - that succulent wreath pictured above? Not at my house but advertised by Verde Garden on their facebook page. How beautiful is that??

What I thought:

Another good, easy and fun read which I enjoyed. I'm not sure how easy it is to host a radio show out of your house, so I can't comment on how realistic the main charater's choice of career is. I did enjoy the fact that this book is written in the present time. (I've been reading a lot of historical fiction lately.) It is nice to see that the heros from the current war have not been forgotten nor their reintroduction to society after their service. A great book about love, overcoming fears and putting the past behind you. I enjoyed this book and will look for other works by Susan May Warren in the future.

Book Review: Shattered by Melody Carlson and Giveaway!

Cleo now faces the chilling consequences of her actions and a secret that it is eating her up inside. As Cleo fights through her grief and guilt, she learns about faith in God and forgiveness through him.

My thoughts:

Wow! This book was intense! I was not expecting the plot to turn the way that it did and am glad that I put the time in to read this one. It didn't take me long, I read it over the weekend, whenever I could find the time. I kept trying to guess what was going to happen next, and each time, I was inevitably wrong! The story was well written, in a tone that is good for older teens (high school) and adults alike. Although I won't give spoilers, please keep your tissues handy. The emotional messages conveyed in this book are powerful!

I was able to secure a copy of this book on my Kindle as well as received a free one in the mail from Glass Road Public Relations for my participation in the book tour for Shattered. I must admit, I've been amiss. I have this book on my desk. I have been looking at it, then picking up my Kindle for convenience. I was supposed to post my review of this book on 6/8 and the date slipped by me. I was provided a complimentary copy of the book by Glass House Public Relations.

The Poopy Diaries

Kind of sounds like a book, right? But, as far as I know, it is only our lives right now. Potty training is moving along. #1 into the potty with no problem. Any time, any where. (Except in the middle of the night when she's in a pull up.) #2? Not so much. Our SweeTart is a controller. A withholder, if you will. She would rather hold that poop in until she explodes, which she seems to be doing quite frequently. Not the infantile explosion but, rather, a controlled explosion - half in her pull up or panties and half in the potty. I know she is getting there -- and I shouldn't push her -- I am just trying to figure out why she won't poop in the potty.

Our other two were the same way, kind of. Withholders. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) they would poop in their sleep, in the middle of the night, into their pull up. There was none of the drama that we have with SweeTart - "I have to go poopy" "no I don't" - play resumes - "I have to go potty" "no i don't" after five of these types of scenes running into the house from playing out side and having nothing to show for it, she'll finally miss that "call" and land part of it in her panties. Sometimes, though, I am a lazy mom and offer her a pull up after about the third "false" alarm which she generally takes graciously. I think she knows how I abhor cleaning poop out of toddler panties and from her pants. She will get it, I know. Eventually. And I will be her first (or second) loudest cheerleader when it happens!

She frequently wears stretch pants, shorts, skirts, dresses and skorts. "Moveable" clothing. But what happens when it is too cold in the morning to wear a skirt without tights? Or after a day at the beach and you want to do the boardwalk and rides at night?

When a well-planned, perfectly executed, two-day trip to reclaim a piece of her youth stretches into a week stuck in the middle of nowhere tailing Joel “Fynn” Trager (a man she wants to kick, bite, and lick all at the same time), Catherine begins to realize that maybe her mother is right when she says, “Life is real, not ideal.” Her mother also says that one should always pack an extra change of clothes… maybe Catherine should have paid more attention when she was growing up.

What I thought:

Certainly not what I expected. What I thought of "chick lit" has been flushed. I was expecting sexy scenes, not giggles in the bedroom. I loved it! I thought it was a quick and easy read. Part of the story is based on an eBay deal that never happened. We all know how much I love eBay and I could so relate! Cat is full of emotion that every female reader will relate to and part of a typical, yet disfunctional family (who can't relate to that??) Also strongly emphasized? Friendship, family connections and love.

A few books I've read recently have been well written but totally predictable, kind of like Sweet Valley High romances when we were young teenagers (oh, so long ago.) This book? Not so much. Well written and entertaining from the beginning straight through to the end. It is full of laugh out loud moments; I would highly recommend this book. Heck, I've recommended books I haven't read that were on Amazon for 99 cents, so you should really go download this one! It comes with my seal of approval!!

What did my girls and I do on Friday night, after I had finished this book (while the boys were out with their friends)??? We went out for Sundaes, of course.

Doomsday? Rapture? Today????

So many things to do ... especially if the world is going to end ... today. I haven't done much research on this topic but from what I've "heard" 6 p.m. is the time? Eastern time? Will it go in waves across the time zones, kind of like the New Year's Eve celebrations? I am curious. Will only the good go? Leaving the rest of us here? There are many different views of heaven. What is yours? Do you think that Heaven resembles "What Dreams May Come" and everyone has thier own personal heaven or hell? Do you think that Heaven will have everyone sleeping on clouds and there is "nothing" and we remember "nothing" from our time on earth? On my way home from work yesterday, I was listening to the radio and that was what one of the callers said - (paraphrased, obviously) "...remember nothing from life on earth ... worship only the Lord ... all others are secondary ... no housing, clothing or love, other than the Lord's..." What do you think??

If today really is the last day on Earth, I think Hubs should come home from work and hang out with us for a bit. Especially if he won't be remembering us in the "next" phase. I will disappointed that my children will never get to see all of the beauties that this world has to offer ... the island of Jamaica ... their first kisses ... first broken heart ... the Grand Canyon (heck, I want to get there too!) ... I have a whole list of things I want to do with them ... maybe I should prepare a bucket list for "family time" as well as my own "personal" bucket list. I will get right on that. Maybe I will even post about it. Another day.

But, for today, if there only is today, my family and friends should know that I love and cherish them. xoxoxo

About the Authors

About Heather: Heather Munn was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in southern France where her parents were missionaries like their parents before them. She has a BA in literature from Wheaton College and now lives in a Christian intentional community in rural Illinois, where she and her husband, Paul, host free spiritual retreats for the poor, especially those transitioning out of homelessness or addiction. When not writing or hosting, she works on the communal farm.

About Lydia: Lydia Munn, daughter of missionary parents, grew up in Brazil. She received a BA in literature from Wheaton College, and an MA in Bible from Columbia Graduate School of Bible and Missions. With her husband, Jim, she has worked in church planting and Bible teaching since 1983, notably in St. Etienne, near the small town in the central mountains of France which forms the background of How Huge the Night. The Munn's now live in Grenoble, France.

What I Thought:

I thought that this was a fantastic book. It ropes you in with the goodness of the characters and the tumulotous journey they experience both together and apart. We are first introduced to 15 year old Julien who has been displaced from his family's home in Paris to relocate with his grandfather in the French countryside. Julien, like any teenager, feels angst when he has had to leave his friends and familiar surroundings for the safety of the country. He has fears of being the "new kid" at school, not being able to make friends, and the "what ifs" of World War II. Through Julien we are shown how hard it is to change, accept change and make change.

We see through the eyes of not only Julien, but Benjamin as well, a Jewish boy who has been sent to live with Julien's family in the countryside. Hopefully far away from Hitler's reach and persecution. Benjamin shows us how hard it is to be different ... Jewish in a Protestant community. Away from his parents when everyone else has theirs. We see both Julien and Benjamin grow and thrive in a not so perfect world.

On the flip side of the beauty of the countryside, we meet Nina and Gustav, opraned Jewish children from Austria who are also trying to escape the Nazi regime. While never placed in a concentration camp, these siblings enounter hardships, face others bigotry yet also learn to see the good in people in a harsh world.

I thoroughly enjoyed this books and the facts within. If only my high school history teacher could read this post. He might fall off of his chair. This book is history, made interesting. Or fiction with a touch of history. There are notes at the end of the book which outline the historical fact that is contained in the book, as well as pointing out items of fiction therein.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a good historical novel. Great even for teenage boys to read - no romance or mushy stuff contained! Great items for discussion shoudl you want to recommend for your next book club reading!

Last week, I received a sample of Rachael Ray Nutrish just 6 dry dog food to give to our dogs and provide an honest review. They even sent a cool bowl for our participation. Very pretty - good for a small dog - not the beasts we have. Maybe we'll gift it to Reef - isn't her birthday soon??

I'll start by introducing my our canine kids: Jack, an all white male boxer, with a bad back and an attitude problem and Guinness, a brindle Boxer with a black mask - generally our "happy go lucky" kind of guy. They're both overweight - and currently on a diet. This food was like manna from heaven for them. Because of the diet? Maybe. One thing I have noticed about Jack is that as he ages, his stomach seems to get upset more easily that it used to. Certain foods set him off. One such food: wheat! I am happy to point out that Nutrish Just 6 is wheat free (as well as corn free and soy free too!) That is a major selling point our book. His stomach did not seem to be affected by trying this new food out at all. (Guinness either - he was looking for more - sorry boys, the sample was only 6 oz.) There are also no fillers or by-products in this food. The kibble is a smaller brown, round shape which is what my dogs are used to. This food has 100% of the ingredients necessary to give your dog a healthy and balanced diet. Who doesn't want that for their best friend?

Just 6 is sold by the bag, which come in both 6 and 14 pound sizes. (Generally we buy our food by the 44 pound bag!) This food is available not only at pet food stores but grocery stores and discount stores, such as Walmart, for your convenience. In my area of NJ, which is not an overly populated area, bordering between suburbia and green acres, there are more than 26 stores within a 20 mile radius who carry the Nutrish brand of dog food. Nutrish Just 6 is also available at various, reputable online retailers (if you're like me and don't enjoy shopping!)
