Tweens / Hormones? Oh my!

As I struggle to be the (good) Mom of a 9 year old girl and 10 year old boy, I have to tell you that I insist that "hormones" are flying all over our house like no other matter could.  And the 3 year old?  Let's not go there right now (since she thinks she is 15.)

Now, I know that some of you are thinking that I'm giving away TMI with this post, but really - when should I be expecting the hormones in the kidlets to hit the fan?  I need to know.  I've been wondering but not doing too much research.  I've been tapping into minds of other moms, although I do not ask for advice easily.   The general consensus:  yes, it's hormones (both of them) and no, it's not going to be over anytime soon.

With that tidbit of information, I'm sure that I should be planning my responses to both kids with more empathy.  With more patience.  With more compassion.  Alas, I have not.  And, I'm a little upset with myself about it.

Today, I received an email from a newsletter to which I subscribe.  There was an article called "Holy Hormones" which I think you will enjoy, especially if you are struggling with this in your homes.

I would love to hear what everyone else who has tweens in their lives is going through - and how to best handle the outbursts, tears and screams.  (please?)

I don't have a tween yet, but I have a niece who is a tween. She absolutely dreaded hanging out with me at the mall. Thankfully, by the end of the day she was my sweet girl again, chatting away and singing in the car.

I have a 15 year old girl. Lets say I am getting grayer day by day.She has pretty much been a great kid, she will be driving soon and I have been stressing over that. Good luck with your tweens. We will miss them when there gone so enjoy your time now. Time flies by rather fast.

I have boys and I find 9-11 are tough years for them. Now that my oldest is 13, he is a hoot.

As for girls, I have recently heard some grumbling on the soccer sidelines about 9-year-old girls being weepy and clingy and then downright... ugh! Seems like it is the norm and not the exception. I guess that is good and bad? It is so hard growing up, and having been through it all before, it can be harder for us to watch!

Luckily don't have to deal with this yet. But, I'd say your kids are right about the right age for this to be happening. Good Luck with everything!

Hi Kristie - welcome to the club of hormone hell. I have two teens 13 and 15. It's a lot worse with the 15 year old. When she is having her emotional moments, I tell her its normal and let her cry on my shoulder. However, she has also been a bit argumentative lately which gets on my last nerve but I just tell myself that it's a phase and let her know that she can't call me names or speak to me like I don't matter. It's a challenge but I also know my kids are good kids and we'll get though this together. Thanks for dropping by Great Beauty Buys. I'm a new follower from VB.

Oh man...I am soooo cracking up. Yeah, it starts at like 9 or 10 and goes on FOR-FREAKING-EVER!. My oldest is 21 and he still needs me to put him in his place sometimes. And he's married, a father and in the military!

I have 2 teens right now, one tween, on grade-schooler and a pre-schooler. I too, suffer the guilts of not being a loving mom sometimes. But they can be overwhelming. How do we handle it? Drugs....lots of drugs.

LOL...no. Not really. I just have to dig deep into my soul and find that patience sometimes and try to remember I was just like them.

Well, now as I'm wiping the tears from my eyes, I can only say God Bless you and your family. Especially Joel.

There is no way I have dealt with anything remotely close to this, but I remember what a girl I used to work with told me when I found out child #4 had aspergers.

I was 33, son #4 was 3, I was pregnant with #5 and I had just found out his diagnosis. I was working and crying silently wondering if it was my fault. The 23 year old girl next to me who was the mother of 3 young girls and in the middle of a horrible divorce said to me, "Instead of asking God why you and your son, maybe you could thank Him that He knew you were the right mom for this boy."

Out of the mouths of babes. That girl, barely into her 20's summed it all up with those few words. Life has been easier to look at since she said that to me.

All the best
